“So did you give Jenny her dog back?”

“That’s the question you have after all of that?”

Colleen laughs. “Well, I guess I should offer you that icepack too.”

“I need it more for my ego than my dick,” I admit as I shift in my shorts because my dick is killing me. “She spent the day flirting with those four assholes living there. She threw herself at them in front of Ace and Elliot and made me look like an asshole. She made what we had seem trivial and spent the day writing shit about me in that notebook.”

“Hmm,” Colleen hums. “Sounds like your picnic wasn’t any more fun than mine.”

It takes Colleen until the change of seasons to finally admit to me that she had a summer fling with the ex-NBA player that has shown up in Falls Village and hired me to keep the media at bay while he stays hidden from the limelight. But she doesn’t do it without making me face and share my own feelings.

“I know insecurity when I see it, Black,” she says using my last name even though she never usually does. “I look at it every day in the mirror and yet,” she shrugs, “here I am with one of Olivia’s pastries on my plate alongside my tea instead of going for that walk that Dr. Hughes thinks will help clear my head and keep my heart from stopping. What he can’t understand is that my heart stopped beating years ago.”

“I’m not insecure,” I say, but then as the thought percolates, I take that statement back and correct myself. “I’m confident in my job.”

“I’m not talking about your job, Callan. I’m talking about in life. Your history of social inadequacies make you question every move you make. Your early years without friends, makes you vulnerable to your friends now. You don’t want to lose them. You’re allowing Jordan to take advantage of that. She’s in love with you and stringing you along. Maybe she’ll take you back,” she shrugs, “maybe she won’t, but what she’s doing to you now isn’t fair.”

“You speaking from experience?”

Colleen nods then tells me what she’s never told anyone before. “I loved him, and he left. I always knew he’d pick the sport that he was raised to love over me. I had a way to hold him here, but I didn’t want him like that. I decided not to hold our daughter over his head.”

“You never told Teyler that Taylor was his,” I correctly guess.

“No, and I never told her either, but Dr. Hughes thinks it’s time.”

“Maybe I should call him, Dr. Hughes.”

Colleen shrugs again. “Just please don’t speak about this to Teyler or my daughter. I’m not ready yet.”

I hadn’t realized that Colleen and Teyler had spoken or that she knew I was hanging out with the ex-NBA star.

“He’s here for you,” I state.

“He’s mentioned something along those lines.”

“Well, I hope he has better luck with you than I’m having with Jordan.”

After Colleen chews me out for not
